Gina & Hee Sung: The Taglyan, Hollywood

Usually, on the day of the wedding, it's the brides who look utterly nervous and about to burst from all the anxiety and the grooms who look calm, cool and collect but when Hee Sung first walked into the Taglyan that day I could just see the tension in his shoulders and his heart palpitating through his shirt. Then, in walked Gina as if she just frollicked in the fields without a care in the world. I mean, it was like this day was just like any other day for her!

Gina was definitely one of the most memorable brides because she was just herself. She didn't try to act any more girly or proper just because she was wearing a wedding dress but she laughed, acted goofy and really enjoyed herself as if it was a jeans and t-shirt kind of day. I wish them all the happiness in the world and think they'll have no problem with that because of Gina's playful personality and charm and Hee Sung's genuinely sweet, sweet heart.

Normally, I don't have too much to say about the venue only because the pictures speak for themselves, but the Taglyan was so beautiful that I couldn't stop talking about it even after. Their newly renovated lighting and entertainment system was unreal and their food was AMAZING!

Susanna and Jerome at Pandora on Green

I know I've said this before but I can't help but say it over and over again...I've been so blessed to have been able to work with some of the most creative brides! And Susanna definitely cannot be excluded from this list. She very carefully put together the details of this wedding while finishing up her 3rd semester in law school at NYU...yes, in New York City...all the way across the country!!! And as you will see, the details of this wedding are absolutely delicious!

Just to give you a little history lesson, I met Susanna through Jerome, who I met through my husband (remember Gerry?). Gerry was one of Jerome's best men and the two have been friends since elementary school. I've personally known Jerome for about 8 years now and I always wondered what kind of a girl he'd marry. I had an idea of what he wanted, but was sometimes doubtful of whether such a girl existed. BOY, was I wrong! Susanna is the quintessential trophy wife. Not only is she super smart and super hot but she's sassy, fun AND the girl's got style!

But as much as Jerome may have found his trophy wife, Susanna didn't do too bad for herself either. ;) Here's to the trophy couple!

Warning: Major Husband Boasting Entry

I don't know many husbands who are willing to give up a Saturday of golfing, tv watching, or just plain sleeping in to come out and do some major manual and mental labor, but guess what...MINE IS!

When I first started se.lah.ve, I felt nervous about hiring assistants I never worked with or asking friends to help out just for the fun of it. And why would I when I had a husband who probably had more experience organizing church events and activities than me. So, although I originally hired Gerry by default he's become a vital part of my team and someone I need by my side...even professionally.

Quite honestly, sometimes I think Gerry loves weddings just as much as I do, maybe even more. When I see the lengths he will go to make the bride and groom happy, it really puts me to shame. I mean, who calls 5 local churches for a brass candle lighter because the candles the mothers are supposed to walk down the aisle with keep blowing out in the wind? And who searches and drives to the nearest Michael's and buys an extra guestbook because a family member is concerned that one might not be enough? And I have to add, I didn't even ask him to do any of these things! (Now, if only this would also apply to the dishes at home).

I just feel so fortunate to be able to do what I love, with the person I love most. I love being able to drive home together after a long day and talk about all the fun (and sometimes not so fun) moments of the day. I truly am lucky to have a husband-assistant-life partner who not only supports me with his words but with his actions as well.

Seriously, I'm a Winner. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!

Sam & Susan at Franciscan Gardens, San Juan Capistrano

Sam and Susan hold a very special place in my heart because they were one of the first couples I saw throughout the whole planning process from beginning to end. I was there as Susan waivered back and forth from a rustic, vintage styled wedding to a whimsical frenzy. She originally planned on having a traditional church ceremony, but a last minute change in plans made her take it all outdoors! In the end, she ended up with a wedding that was completely a reflection of her bright and cheerful personality and a day that was filled with much celebration, love and laughter.

Susan was definitely the visionary behind all of the details you are about to see...I was just an extra pair of hands and feet. ;) I hope you enjoy all the lovely pictures by Gabriel Ryan, who not only captured the day oh-so-perfectly but was also one of the nicest people I've had the opportunity to work with.

Never judge a book by its cover...but shoes can definitely say a lot about a person's character.

I want to thank Sam and Susan for making me a part of not only their wedding day but a part of their life. :)

   Long time no blog, I know! I honestly don't know where the time has gone. I know it hasn't been that long since I started this blog but it still feels like just yesterday when I got my first inquiry to officially coordinate a wedding. And now, I'm already in 7 deep, with 7 more on the way! I am dead serious when I say life is FULL of surprises!
   The last 8 months have been a roller coaster of emotions. They have been one of the most challenging, demanding yet incredibly rewarding months of my life. I've had to evaluate my life, my goals, my future and the future of se.lah.ve (which is partially the reason for the break in blogging).
   After experiencing weddings from the vendor's perspective, I've been completely and utterly exposed to the backstage of the planning process. There have been things I've seen that I've liked and things I've seen that I didn't like; things that have turned me on and off to the industry as a whole. I think the one thing I've observed that sets apart the good vendors from the bad is where they put their focus. I've met vendors where their main priority is helping the bride and groom make their wedding day one of the most memorable days of their life and then I've met vendors that only care about getting exposure and being linked to the latest blog and the hottest photographer. And I'll be the first to admit, it's all very tempting and easy to get sucked into (which again, is another reason for the break in blogging) but I've realized that that's the part that makes it so not enjoyable and so unrewarding.
   I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's been a long road discovering my identity as a "wedding planner" and figuring out what direction I want to take this and although I don't have all of my questions answered, I've decided to take it one day at a time...because hey, "c'est la vie" right? It's not just in the name...

Now, to transition into a wedding I did back in August...I don't know what Jane eats for breakfast but it definitely must be one for champions because this girl is the closest thing to Superwoman I know. She planned this insanely beautiful wedding all in the span of three and a half months! And if that weren't enough, 2 of those weeks were dedicated to missions work in Cambodia! One of a kind, I tell ya. And David, what can I say he was just a gentle spirit throughout the whole process. Always so calm, cool and collect.

Too bad vows don't expire because if I were to ever renew mine, I'd want to do it here at the Craven's Estate in Pasadena

Noah's First Birthday

A couple of weeks ago I had the honor of coordinating my first, First Birthday for my friend's son, Noah. I never imagined how a one year old's birthday could be so elaborate, but this mommy was truly dedicated to making her one and only baby boy's birthday truly special!

Yes, my friend made hats for every child in attendance...and yes the fringe is sewn on.

Yes, the favors were personalized for each child and yes, she is crazy.

We had a craft station in the patio of the restaurant and I think it was one of the greatest ways to keep kids busy and entertained while the adults enjoyed their meal inside.

It also kind of helped that the craft (wooden sailboat from a kit) was a bit challenging...definitely kept them occupied :)

After all of their hard work building their boats, they had a blast floating it in the kiddie pool!

A year can feel like a long time at times, but when I think back to when Noah was first born and all the growing he's done since then, it truly amazes me that all that could happen within a year. I truly, truly love this kid! It's to the point where I may have to love my own child more than him, but I may end up liking him a little bit more ;)

I love being part of events where I can truly celebrate along with the guests. It makes the day so much more enjoyable, meaningful, satisfying, rewarding...the list can go on.

Nobers, if you read this one day...

I just want you to know that Auntie loves you so much! I know Uncle Gerry keeps saying he's going to be the "scary uncle" to you, but just know that he has good intentions and that you'll probably grow to love and appreciate him more when you are 21. (That's if mommy let's him stick around 'til then). :)

We hope to celebrate many more birthdays with you and we pray that you continue to be a blessing to all those around you! Make mommy and daddy proud!

TUTORIAL: Hemp Balls

I first saw these nifty little pieces on one of my favorite home decorating blogs (craftynest.com) and I just knew I had to try it! The original instructions showed how to make these as pendant lamps, but I was actually inspired to use them as part of my centerpieces for my dad's birthday party. The original directions called for hemp string but because I had to make close to 15, I decided to go for a more budget friendly route and chose to use crochet string. Hemp is obviously a lot more sturdier, but the crochet string worked just fine for my purposes.

Whenever I find a DIY project I want to do, I always look up multiple tutorials because I feel like each of them offer a little more detail in some areas more than others. I would encourage you to do the same, but please don't hesitate to contact me for any questions. My goal is for all of you to say at the end of this tutorial, "That's it? That looks so easy!" So let me know if you find anything difficult to understand or if you have any questions at all.

I thought these were so cool and easy to make and they definitely added flair to all of my decorations. Some people used them as pendant lamps, I used them for centerpieces...what will you use them for???

MATERIALS:
- 1 Small/Medium size bouncy ball
- Hemp String or Crochet String, for a wallet-friendly alternative
- Ailene's Clear Tacky Glue
- 1 Red Solo cup
- Scissors
- Black Marker
- 1 Bike Needle (Very Important!)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Put the cup over the inflation hole and draw a line around the cup.

If you're not too sure which hole I'm talking about, it's this one:

2. Next, you're going to pour out some of the glue on a disposable surface (paper plate, plastic cup, etc.) Just keep in mind that you're not going to want to keep whatever you put it on.

3. This is where it starts to get a little messy. Take your index finger and dip it into the glue and apply it to the end of the string.

4. Rub the glue down the string.

5. Then begin to wrap the string around the ball. I usually start at the bottom where I drew the circle, but it doesn't really matter where you start.

Just keep on gluing and wrapping, gluing and wrapping...

6. When you feel like you've achieved the desired look, cut the string and secure it with a dab of glue. Let it dry for 3-4 hours. When it is completely dry, you can take the bike needle and poke it through the hole.

When it begins to deflate, just let it be.

You may need to help it along at some point, so carefully stick your hand in and squeeze the ball to let the air out.

When most of the air has come out, gently remove the ball from the shell.

Just like this!

And voila, you've got a very cool piece of art, all for very little effort and almost no money!

Sam & Susan Engagement Session

FUNNY STORY: I was at a wedding a few years ago and the MC called up 3 guys and 3 girls for a dancing competition where the winners would receive a portable DVD player. Great prize, I know! We forced our friend (Ph*l Je*n) to go up there and he ended up getting partnered with this cute girl in a yellow dress. When the music started, these two went at it like they were trying to win a home theater sound system! I mean, they were definitely shakin' what their mama gave 'em! Anyway, they ended up winning and I remember thinking, "Wow, this girl is really crazy...CRAZY AWESOME!" Who knew a few years later, I'd be planning the cute, crazy but awesome, girl in the yellow dress's wedding...coincedence? I think not!

Can't wait to get started on all the fun details for their whimsical wedding inspired by fun pops of color and my favorite...burlap! Time to oil up the flower pom pom making machine again!

I can't wait for their wedding! We have been running into some issues with the church and may even be changing ceremony venues, only problem is...the wedding is in NOVEMBER! Most couples would be freaking out, but Sam and Susan have been so grounded and level headed throughout the whole process. Keep your eyes on the prize, guys!!! I guess that's truly se.lah.ve at its best for you! Will we surrender to life's lemons??? NO WAY!!! Stay tuned for what kind of lemonade we make out of this situation...

Teresa and Kenneth

Teresa and Kenneth got married a few weeks ago at the Athenaeum located on the Cal Tech campus in Pasadena. The location was beautiful with a nice open space for the ceremony and a very intimate courtyard for the reception.

I met Teresa only 3 weeks before her wedding and although those 3 weeks went by in a flash, I felt like Teresa and I had known each other for years! I instantly felt comfortable which allowed me to get in the zone and do my thang! Poor Kenneth though, the first time I met him was in the middle of the Lakers vs. Celtics game 6...that was true dedication and devotion!

Needless to say, I had so much fun working with these two and am so glad to have found a new friendship in the most unexpected way. I love that about this job!

Photos were taken by Amelia Lyon...and can I just say: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I've always heard great things about her and how awesome her work is, but meeting her in person made me fall in love! She's not only talented but she's so down to earth and FUN! See for yourself...

The Wedding Epiphany

epiph·a·ny \i-ˈpi-fə-nē\ : an illuminating discovery, realization or disclosure

We all start out having an original idea of what we want our Big Day to look like and how we imagine it to go and then we begin talking to friends, reading wedding magazines and getting sucked into the ever-so-growing World of Blog. We then get bombarded with so much information and so many ideas that we lose sight of everything that was important to us when we first started planning.

I guess that would be my first advice to all those brides planning a wedding out there: if you're finding yourself a little overwhelmed by all of the details and you feel frustrated because things aren't coming together the way you imagined, take a moment to reflect on what is important to you. Think about the things you want to celebrate; the things you want others to celebrate with you. Ultimately, this day isn't just about how beautiful your floral arrangements are or how unique your party favors may be, but it's to celebrate the love that you've shared and the commitment you've made for the days to come.

The wedding industry is huge and the resources available is innumerous. It can either be a source of inspiration or a stumbling block when trying to get all of your details to cohesively come together. If you don't have a strong foundation of what is important to you and what direction you're going, you're going to end up being very overwhelmed, very frustrated and very confused. Worst of all, you'll end up having a wedding that is a hodge podge of everyone else's ideas and there won't be an ounce of personalization to a day that is devoted to you and your special someone. To me, that is a very sad story to tell. But fortunately, I think most Brides (if not all) at some point in their planning process come to that moment of clarity when everything comes back into perspective...hence, the birth of the Wedding Epiphany (coined by my very own Bride, who emailed me as soon as her's came to her!) According to this Bride, "It completely liberates you from the stress of planning and allows you to enjoy the process once again!"

Dad's Sweet Sixty

A few weeks back, our family celebrated my dad's 60th birthday. For those of you who may not know such traditions, Koreans usually celebrate big milestone birthdays such as a baby's 1st (often called "Dohl"), the 70th (chil-soon) and the 80th (pahl-soon). And where most people don't really celebrate the 60th (han-gap), my mom said she's always wanted to throw one for my dad. But really, she's always just looking for another excuse to invite people over and have a party!

I was given the task of designing the layout and decor for this event, but it wasn't easy since I was on a tight budget. With my "bare bones" budget, I had to rent tables and chairs for 40 people as well as make the place look half decent since it was going to take place in my parents' backyard. Of course I wanted to deck the place out with Tuscan-inspired string lights and fresh, wild flowers but when I sat down and did the math it just wouldn't cooperate with my budget.

So, what do you do when life throws you lemons? You make paper flowers!

LOTS OF THEM!!!

I visited tons of craft stores looking for tissue paper in pretty colors, but failed. They only sold common colors like red, blue, yellow, pink and green and a lot of the websites I found only sold in bulk. But eventually, I found a website that sold it per sheet and their color selection was very good! http://www.ribbonsandfavors.com/ : not the cutest looking website, but it's legit.

New Beginnings

After months of contemplating how I should debut my blog, I decided to make a tribute to the couple who started it all for me.

Meet Hyunah and Tae, or as I like to call them "HyunTae" for more reasons than one. ;) I met Hyunah in college when she had big hair, big shoes and big eyes (which she still has, just not as much blue eye shadow on them). When I think back on the times I've shared with Hyunah, I can't remember a time when we didn't laugh till our bellies ached and our faces were sore. And although I only hung out with Tae on a few occasions, it didn't take long for me to realize what a sweet and genuine guy he was and how perfect they were for each other. (It really only took one night in Vegas and 2 clubs...HA!)

This couple is special to me not only because they are dear friends of mine, but also because they were the ones who inspired me to pursue a career in event planning. When they asked me to coordinate their wedding it was such a huge honor for me that I took on the job with the utmost enthusiasm and excitement. Just ask them, my Blackberry was glued to my hand and ready to respond to every question they had and problem they needed resolved. (I think I may have even scared Tae a little hehe). But in any case, it brought me true joy and satisfaction in helping these two take the biggest step of their lives and help them focus on the main objective for the day: celebrating their love and lifelong commitment to each other with family and friends.

I can't wait to share my adventures as I begin this new journey myself. It's a bit overwhelming and a little scary from time to time, but most of the time I'm too busy planning out my next event and meeting with my brides that I don't get a chance to think too long about the "what if's"...and that's the way I'd like to keep it. :)

It was such a beautiful day! Seriously, the weather was perfect AND people were on time but I'll stop blabbing and let the pictures speak for themselves!

I always knew Hyunah would make a beautiful Bride, but wow I can't even describe to you how beautiful she was...Youkeun Oh did a pretty fabulous job capturing it, though.
